Scientist, Protein Chemistry

JUST is looking for a highly motivated, hands-on Scientist to be a part of our Protein and Analytical Chemistry team. You will play a key role in our ongoing product development and research projects, working closely with other departments in R&D. This position will primarily be responsible for protein characterization and method development of protein analyses to support our current products and to assist in the development of new products. 

[**Responsibilities **]{.underline}

  • Perform analysis and characterization of proteins and protein mixtures 

  • Develop, validate, and document protein assays and methods of analysis 

  • Manage the maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation in the protein chemistry lab 

  • Work cross-functionally with Analytical Chemistry, Food Science, and Process Science teams  

  • Maintain a safe and organized lab environment 

  • Summarize and report data and method development efforts and present work in collaborative meetings with other R&D groups 

  • Always conduct work in a safe manner, consistent with best practices in laboratory safety and environmental stewardship guidelines 

  • Perform additional laboratory duties as required to support R&D and company projects

**Education & Experience **

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related field with 0-2 years experience, MS with 6+ years experience, or BS with 8+ years experience 

  • Strong background in biochemical and biophysical characterizations of proteins (3+ years) 

  • 2+ years experience in protein purification/separation and characterization

  • Experience with enzymology and kinetics a plus 

**Skills & Qualifications **

  • Knowledge of or experience with a variety of analytical techniques for protein characterization including HPLC, FTIR, DLS, DSC, and CD 

  • FPLC (GE AKTA), gel electrophoresis, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy  

  • Programming experience for data analysis using Jupyter notebooks, Python scripts and/or R scripts a plus 

  • Strong critical thinking, time management and organizational skills 

  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate records, and an affinity for troubleshooting 

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and work effectively and collaboratively with cross-functional organization 

  • Ability to pass a standard background check

This is a regular full-time position based out of our Headquarters in San Francisco, CA.
