Italcanditi Group Presents 2024 Sustainability Report
- 100% of electricity from renewable sources across all sites
- 98% of sugar sourced from European-grown sugar beet
- 70% of total ingredients locally sourced
- +35% increase in training hours for employees
Pedrengo (Bergamo, Italy), November 17th 2025 – Italcanditi Group presents its 2024 Sustainability Report, the second consolidated one encompassing not only Italcanditi but also Comprital and Prodotti Rubicone. All companies are part of Nexture, the platform dedicated to developing high-quality ingredients and added value solutions for the food industry.
For the first time, 2024 edition also includes data related to the manufacturing plant in Goes, Netherlands, acquired by Italcanditi Group in 2024, as explained by Carlo Parmoli, CEO of Italcanditi: “With the acquisition of the Goes manufacturing plant in the Netherlands from CSM Ingredients in 2024, we further strengthened our capabilities in the semi-finished fruit preparation area, allowing us to increase production synergies, enhance our geographical coverage through two manufacturing sites, and be even better equipped to serve fast-growing segments such as the plant-based dairy alternatives one.”
Climate Impact and Energy Efficiency
The Italcanditi Group continues to advance its decarbonization journey through investments that combine technological innovation and environmental responsibility. Its strategy focuses on reducing reliance on fossil fuels, improving energy performance, and expanding the use of renewable sources across all production sites.
In 2024, Italcanditi Group utilized 100% renewable electricity across its operations, with 91% of total consumption covered by Guarantees of Origin certificates and the remaining share generated on-site through photovoltaic systems. Installed solar capacity now reaches 1,255 kWp at the Italcanditi Pedrengo site and 80 kWp at the Prodotti Rubicone site, while Comprital’s new photovoltaic system will become operational in 2025.
At the Pedrengo site, Italcanditi operates a biogas cogeneration system that simultaneously produces heat and electricity from a single fuel source. This technology, known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), enables the recovery and reuse of heat generated during electricity production, minimizing waste and reducing environmental impact.
The biogas powering the system is produced on-site through anaerobic digestion at Italcanditi’s wastewater treatment plant. The recovered heat is used in production processes, while the electricity generated is fed into the national grid. In 2024, the cogeneration plant supplied 1,533 MWh to Italy’s energy system, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable national energy mix.
Italcanditi (Pedrengo) also operates a natural gas trigeneration system (CCHP – Combined Cooling, Heat and Power), which builds on the advantages of cogeneration by producing cooling energy from the recovered thermal energy, further improving overall energy efficiency and resource utilization.
Finally, the Group maintains its commitment to sustainable packaging: approximately 85% of Italcanditi’s products are delivered to customers in reusable steel tanks, reducing single-use materials and promoting a circular approach.
Responsible Sourcing
Sourcing high-quality raw materials responsibly and sustainably is a central pillar of the Italcanditi Group’s strategy. With its diverse businesses, the Group adopts tailored sourcing approaches that prioritize local supply chains, particularly for fruit-based preparations, to ensure freshness, traceability, and reduced transport-related emissions.
In 2024, 70% of the volume of raw ingredients used across the Group were sourced locally, strengthening relationships with local communities and ensuring superior product quality. Moreover, the Group is committed to sustainable sourcing, including:
- 83% of palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
- 98% of sugar sourced from European-grown sugar beet, supporting local agriculture and minimizing the environmental impact of long-distance transport.
These results align with the Group’s long-term targets: 100% certified direct materials by 2030 and 100% of direct suppliers monitored and assessed in terms of social impacts by the end of 2025.
Product Innovation
Innovation continues to be a defining strength for the Group. The integration of the Goes site — now operating under the Vitalfood brand — has expanded capabilities in fruit preparations and water-based creams, enabling the company to offer a portfolio of over 3,000 recipes ranging from fruit preparations and warm flavor bases to glazes, candied fruit, and marrons glacés.
Comprital’s training arm, The Athenaeum School, also plays an important role in driving innovation and knowledge sharing within the artisan gelato sector. It offers expert-led, high-quality courses for gelato makers and pastry chefs. In 2024, Atheneum launched the Atheneum on Tour initiative, delivering courses directly at distributor locations across Italy, making professional education more accessible and supporting customers in maximizing the value of their Comprital products. Rubicone further contributed to product innovation with the expansion of its Crumbles line — now featuring 11 versatile, ready-to-use crunchy inclusions — and the launch of two new FitGelato references inspired by the Brazilian berry açaí, both no-sugar-added solutions designed for a wide range of gelato and dessert applications.
Employees Well-being
At the end of 2024, the Group employed 592 people across three countries, marking a 25% increase compared to the previous year, largely due to the integration of the Goes plant. Training and professional development remain a strong focus: 3,970 hours of training were delivered in 2024 (+35% vs 2023), covering leadership, safety, digital skills, and wellbeing initiatives. These initiatives reflect the Group’s values and its commitment to a safe, inclusive, and people-centered workplace.
