Better Dairy secures self-affirmed GRAS status for lactopontin ingredient

Better Dairy has achieved self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for lactopontin, a milk protein it produces through microbial fermentation. The determination gives the company a safety basis and a path to launch in the US, where it says it is now the only commercially available source of the ingredient. Better Dairy is working with customers on products containing lactopontin, with launches planned in the coming months.

“Achieving Self-Affirmed GRAS is a key step for us. It means we're moving beyond our foundations, developing world-leading science, and opening the door to real commercial applications.”

—Jevan Nagarajah, founder and CEO, Better Dairy

  • Lactopontin occurs naturally in human and bovine milk and is associated with biological signaling pathways linked to tissue growth, repair and renewal.
  • The company is targeting applications in healthy aging, gut health, immunity, joint health, skin health and sports recovery. It positions lactopontin as complementary to collagen, lactoferrin and probiotics.
  • The GRAS determination followed a safety dossier covering composition, manufacturing, purity and specifications. An independent expert panel unanimously concluded that the ingredient is safe under its intended conditions of use.
  • Better Dairy is pursuing separate regulatory pathways in Europe and Asia, as well as additional US approvals, including for early life nutrition.
  • The company will present lactopontin at SupplySide Global in Las Vegas on October 28–30.
