Cell4Food Partners With Algocell to Build Foundation for Scalable Cellular Aquaculture

LISBON, Portugal (January 20, 2026) - Cell4Food and Algocell today announced a strategic collaboration to build the technological foundation for a sustainable and scalable global food supply. This partnership integrates Cell4Food’s cell cultivation technology stack (BlueCell™) - spanning from fish to mollusc, and crustacean animal cells through to final food products - with Algocell’s AI-Powered bioprocess modeling platform (Algocell P™) to accelerate Cell4Food’s process development and optimization.

A Shared Vision for the Future of Food

Cell4Food is a pioneer in cellular aquaculture, focused on developing the robust and scalable biological processes required to produce high-quality seafood components efficiently and consistently. This approach reduces environmental impact while supporting long-term food security.

Developing precise, scalable processes traditionally requires vast investment in physical experimentation. By integrating Algocell's Digital Twin technology, the goal is to complete and optimize a full cell cultivation process - integrating Algocell’s advanced modeling of biological dynamics to architect an optimal production framework. This framework encompasses the precise refinement of media compositions, feeding strategies, and gas regimes, while systematically navigating biological and operational limiting factors to ensure maximum process efficiency and yield.

Data-Driven Optimization

Algocell’s platform generates Digital Twins that combine biological mechanistic models with machine learning to simulate thousands of scenarios in silico. This collaboration aims to:

  • Reduce Trial-and-Error by 80%: Shifting process development from the lab to computational modelling condenses months of work into rapid simulations.

  • Accelerate Development Cycles: Build validated models from minimal experimental data, enabling faster iterations and more predictable decision-making.

  • Ensure Predictable Scale-Up: De-risk the transition to commercial production by identifying the most profitable path to high titers and cell densities.

Leadership Perspectives

"Our vision at Cell4Food is to create the infrastructure that allows sustainable food technologies to move from concept to reality," said Vitor Verdelho Vieira, CEO of Cell4Food. “Building a sustainable new product line requires the right collaborations and access to technologies that were once out of reach.”

“At Algocell, we believe that successfully navigating the ‘valley of death’ requires a foundation of robust and precise modeling. This infrastructure significantly reduces risk and enables levels of process performance and scale that would be difficult to achieve through physical experimentation alone,” said Omri Schanin, CEO of Algocell.

About Cell4Food

Cell4Food is a biotechnology company developing cellular aquaculture technologies to produce cell-based foods from fish, molluscs, and crustaceans. Founded in 2022, Cell4Food is recognized as the first Portuguese company dedicated to cellular aquaculture and the diversification of the global food portfolio. The company operates a distributed network of blue biotechnology laboratories across Portugal and collaborates with research centers and industry partners to build a more sustainable, secure, and ocean friendly seafood system.

About Algocell

The path to full commercial potential in biomanufacturing is often constrained by time and capital-intensive experiments, risky scale-up, and complex bioprocesses, which are challenging to optimize. Algocell overcomes these barriers with an AI-powered bioprocess modeling platform that utilizes hybrid models. By building validated digital twins from just a few runs, Algocell condenses months and years of physical trial-and-error into rapid in silico experiments.

This approach accelerates time-to-market by streamlining process development and scale-up. Simultaneously it ensures predictable results while driving process optimization to maximize yields and gross margins, for precision fermentation and cell culture.
