Ever After Foods and Roslin Technologies report 19-fold cultured meat productivity gain
ByEditor
Ever After Foods (EAF) and Roslin Technologies have released results from a joint cultured meat production program that pairs Roslin's porcine pluripotent stem cells with EAF's Edible Packed Bed (EPB) bioreactor technology. The companies reported cell densities above 150 million cells/ml and structured tissue grown directly on PlantriX, EAF's edible plant scaffold. They also reported dry biomass and cell-derived protein productivity 19 times higher than the same cells achieved in a stirred-tank suspension benchmark. The companies attributed the gain to both higher cell density and greater protein and biomass output per cell.
“The industry has become very good at growing cells, but cells are not the final product. What matters commercially is how efficiently those cells can produce edible protein and tissue.”
—Eyal Rosenthal, CEO, Ever After Foods
- Reported volumetric productivities were 326 g/L wet biomass, 57 g/L dry biomass, and 40 g/L cell-derived protein.
- Wet biomass productivity was 11 times higher than in the stirred-tank benchmark, driven by a fivefold increase in cell density and a fourfold increase in protein and dry biomass produced per cell.
- The edible scaffold made up less than 2% of the final product by weight. The companies said scaffold and media contributions were excluded from all reported values.
- The companies are pursuing further development and scale-up work on the combined cell and tissue-production platform.
