StrainX Bioworks Raises $13M as It Emerges from Stealth to Build a Global Synthetic Biology (SynBio) Company from India
Founders: Akshay Mittal (L) and Dr. Alok Malaviya (R)

May 2026 | India — StrainX Bioworks, a synthetic biology and precision fermentation company building next-generation biological technologies for global markets, has raised $13 million and is emerging from stealth as it prepares to enter its commercialization phase. Over the last two years, it has built an integrated biotechnology platform across strain engineering, fermentation, process scale-up, and product development. It has also successfully demonstrated fermentation at the 10,000-liter scale — a significant achievement in precision fermentation. StrainX is positioned at the forefront of a rapidly accelerating shift toward bio-based innovation and manufacturing, one of the most consequential industrial transformations of the coming decade.

The funding was led by Prime Venture Partners and Leo Capital with participation from Good Startup, Sparrow Capital, Sun Icon Ventures, Dholakia Ventures and WindT (IIT Delhi) Angels. It reflects growing conviction that India is poised to become a global leader in biotechnology—and that a small number of pioneering companies will define this transition.

Founded by IIT Delhi alums Akshay Mittal and Dr. Alok Malaviya, StrainX has spent the past two years operating in stealth mode, focused on building deep scientific capability, execution velocity, and a globally competitive multidisciplinary team that has now grown to more than 100 scientists, engineers, and operators.

A Category-Defining Moment for Biology

Synthetic biology and precision fermentation are rapidly moving from niche scientific fields into mainstream industrial technologies, with applications spanning food, nutrition, materials, and consumer health. With the convergence of a regulatory push, environmental sustainability pressures, supply-chain fragility, and performance demands, biology is increasingly seen as a foundational technology, with global markets expected to reach a multi-trillion-dollar scale over the next decade.

StrainX Bioworks is designed as an integrated biotechnology platform—combining proprietary biological technology, fermentation infrastructure, process engineering, and product development into a single scalable system. This allows the company to move rapidly from scientific discovery to industrial manufacturing and commercialization. Following successful large-scale fermentation trials, the company is already working toward scaling to significantly larger capacities, including pathways to 100,000-liter scale operations in the near future. The company plans to collaborate closely with global food and ingredient partners, enabling faster adoption of bio-based solutions across international markets.

“Biology is becoming a new manufacturing layer for the world,” said Akshay Mittal, Founder & CEO of StrainX. “Over the coming decade, some of the most important products across food, materials, and consumer industries will increasingly be built using biological systems. India has the scientific talent and engineering capability to become a global leader in this transition, and we believe StrainX is being built at the right moment to help drive that shift.”

Aligned with India’s Deep-Tech Push

StrainX’s work closely aligns with the Government of India’s increasing focus on deep-tech, advanced manufacturing, and biotechnology as national priorities. As public and private capital converge around science-led innovation, companies capable of translating research into scalable systems will emerge as long-term leaders.

With talent drawn from leading global and Indian scientific and engineering ecosystems, StrainX is emerging as a pioneer of India’s modern biotech movement—and one of the most globally competitive synthetic biology teams to emerge from the region.

“India is evolving from a biotech manufacturing base into a global hub for SynBio and precision fermentation based category defining innovation. At StrainX, we are building that future,” said Dr. Alok Malaviya, Co-founder & CTO. “Our focus has been to build the scientific and technical depth required to play at that level.”

Investors Signal a Defining Moment in Biotech

Investors backing StrainX see the company as an early leader in a space where enduring companies will be built—and where timing matters.

Brij Bhushan, Managing Partner at Prime Venture Partners, added: “StrainX stood out to us because it combines two things that are rarely found together in biotech: serious science and sharp business execution. The company is not just building molecules in a lab. It is building the team, platform, manufacturing capability and partnerships needed to take Indian bio-manufacturing to the world”

“StrainX is building something that does not come around often: a deep-tech biotech company with both ambition and discipline,” said Rajul Garg, Founder & Managing Partner at Leo Capital. “We are excited to have been on the ground floor of an exciting biotech innovation from the heartland of India, specially through our operations in Bhopal.”

The raise also marks Good Startup’s first investment in India. The fund is known globally for backing only deeply technical, biology-first companies, reinforcing StrainX’s positioning as a serious, science-led platform rather than a trend-driven start-up. “India offers a unique opportunity in precision fermentation due to its talent pool as well as its infrastructure and cost advantages. StrainX is well-positioned to build an enduring company by leveraging these strengths to deliver high quality ingredients to the global market,” said Gautam Godhwani, Managing Partner at Good Startup.

Looking Ahead

As StrainX steps into the public domain, the company remains focused on advancing R&D, expanding scientific and engineering teams, and accelerating commercialization through large-scale fermentation and global partnerships. The company’s integrated model enables it to control the entire value chain, from core biological innovation to fermentation scale-up and commercial development. With biology reshaping multiple industries over the coming decade, StrainX aims to help position India as a global centre for next-generation bio-manufacturing.
