Enifer and Rovio Pet Foods launch dog treat made with Pekilo mycoprotein

Finnish biotech company Enifer and pet food manufacturer Rovio Pet Foods have developed a semi-moist dog treat using Pekilo, a mycoprotein ingredient containing more than 60% protein with a meat-like amino acid profile. The product follows Enifer's completion of its first four-ton commercial production batch and is also designed for white-label applications, giving other pet food brands a path to incorporate the ingredient. Samples will be available at Interzoo 2026.

• Pekilo is derived from technology originally developed by Finland's forest industry in the 1970s and converts food and agricultural side streams into a mycoprotein ingredient.
• A 60-day feeding study involving 16 dogs showed high digestibility, strong palatability, no negative effects on stool quality, and biomarker changes linked to immune activity and oxidative balance.
• Enifer has raised nearly €60 million and is building a commercial-scale production facility in Kirkkonummi, Finland, expected to be completed in 2026.
• The company has recently gained U.S. market access for food-grade Pekilo and has applied for novel food approval in the EU, UK, and Singapore.
